Sailung (also called Sailung Danda) is one of Nepal's most scenic highland destinations, located on the border of Dolakha and Ramechhap districts in Bagmati Province. At an elevation of approximately 3,146–3,200 meters, it is renowned for its sweeping grass-covered hilltops, spectacular Himalayan panoramas, spiritual heritage, and tranquil atmosphere. Unlike busier hill stations, Sailung remains relatively untouched, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking peace, nature, and authentic local culture.
The area is dotted with countless small grassy hillocks that create a wave-like landscape. During sunrise or sunset, the rolling hills are often covered by clouds, creating the illusion of floating above the sky.
Sailung is not only famous for its natural beauty but also for its rich spiritual and cultural importance.
According to Buddhist beliefs, Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) meditated in this region and bestowed teachings and blessings here. Sailung remains a sacred pilgrimage site for Buddhists, with prayer flags, chortens, and monasteries scattered across the hills.
For Hindus, the area is also revered because of Sailungeshwar Mahadev Temple, where devotees visit to offer prayers during religious festivals. The harmonious coexistence of Hindu and Buddhist traditions makes Sailung a symbol of Nepal's multicultural heritage.
During spring, the hills are covered with colorful flowers, while winter transforms the landscape with occasional snowfall. Many visitors consider the sunrise from Sailung among the finest viewpoints near Kathmandu. One of Sailung's newest attractions is the Sailung Great Wall, a stone-paved ridge walkway with viewing platforms and prayer flags. Visitors can stroll along the ridge while enjoying uninterrupted views of the surrounding hills and Himalayan peaks. It has become a popular location for photography, weddings, and short hikes.
