Two trailers gave us the mood of GTA 6. Neither showed how it actually plays. That changed on August 27, 2026, when Rockstar released the Extended Look, a roughly 26-minute gameplay showcase that premiered on Netflix before landing on YouTube. All of it was captured on a PS5.
It is worth watching in full. Here is what stands out, and what it says about the game arriving on November 19, 2026.
Two leads, one story
GTA 5 had three protagonists living mostly separate lives. GTA 6 has two, and they are a couple.
Jason Duval is ex-Army and has been doing jobs for drug runners in the Leonida Keys. Lucia Caminos is just out of prison and wants a better life for herself and her family. Rockstar's official GTA VI site sets them up as a modern Bonnie and Clyde, and the gameplay backs that up. They plan together, fight together and get into trouble together.
It is a smart change. One shared story should feel tighter than three stories fighting for attention. It also gives the game something GTA has rarely had: a relationship you actually care about.
The relationship is part of the game
This was the biggest surprise for me. Jason and Lucia's bond is not only told in cutscenes. It shows up while you play.
In the footage, the two can hold hands while walking, text each other during missions and react to how the other one behaves. A small icon between their portraits seems to track how they are getting along. Rockstar has not explained the system in full, so nobody knows yet how much your choices change the story. Still, it suggests that how you treat your partner matters.
Switching between Jason and Lucia
Character switching is back, and it is much faster than in GTA 5. In one clip, Lucia is driving while the player swaps to Jason to shoot from the passenger seat. In another, the game cuts from Lucia parachuting off a skyscraper to Jason sitting on a couch across the city.
When you are not controlling one of them, the other keeps acting on their own. Your partner will return fire or help during a robbery without being told. PC Gamer's breakdown of the reveal points out that text messages between the pair are even used to trigger a switch mid-mission.
Combat, cops and stealing cars
A few systems clearly borrow from Red Dead Redemption 2, which is good news:
- Talking to people: you can focus on almost any character in the world and choose how to interact, friendly or not. Yes, you can pet dogs.
- Slow-motion aiming: shootouts include a targeting mode that looks a lot like Dead Eye.
- Cover shooting: gunfights look heavier and more deliberate, with Jason and Lucia moving between cover.
- Stealing cars takes effort: breaking into a parked car is now a small skill challenge instead of a single button press.
- Disguises: the pair wear wigs and outfits on some jobs, a step up from the cheap masks of GTA 5.
Police also seem smarter. Early coverage of the reveal reports that the wanted level now goes up to six stars and that officers can remember what you look like, so changing clothes can help you escape.
The supporting cast
A GTA story is only as good as the people around the leads. Rockstar has introduced several so far:
- Cal Hampton: Jason's friend, who is happiest at home with a beer and a conspiracy theory
- Boobie Ike: a Vice City local who has turned street money into property, a club and a recording studio
- Dre'Quan Priest: a music label boss with big plans and a hustler's past
- Real Dimez: a rap duo chasing fame through social media
- Raul Bautista: an experienced bank robber who always wants a bigger score
- Brian Heder: a veteran drug runner in the Keys, and Jason's landlord
Several of them appear in the Extended Look. The opening job is a pickup for Boobie that goes wrong, and Raul rides along during a police chase.
The map: welcome to Leonida
GTA 6 is set in Leonida, Rockstar's version of Florida. Vice City is the headline, but it is only one part of the state. Rockstar has named several regions so far:
- Vice City: the neon, beach-front heart of the map
- Leonida Keys: a chain of tropical islands
- Grassrivers: swampland, complete with alligators
- Port Gellhorn: a faded coastal town
- Ambrosia: an industrial area built around a sugar refinery
- Mount Kalaga National Park: forests and backwoods in the north
Preview coverage suggests the world is roughly twice the size of GTA 5's map. Rockstar has not given an official figure, so treat that as an estimate.
Life between missions
The Extended Look spent a surprising amount of time on downtime. Activities shown or mentioned include basketball, street racing, dirt bikes, base jumping, kayaking, scuba diving, pool and mini-golf. Fighting rings are back as well.
Safehouses work a little like the camps in Red Dead Redemption 2. You can change clothes and grooming there, and the characters' bodies appear to change depending on what they do. There is also an in-game social media feed, which fits a game that pokes fun at influencer culture.
This is where GTA has always been at its best. The missions bring you in, but it is the wandering around that keeps people playing for ten years.

What we still haven't seen
Rockstar has not shown the online mode. The store pages describe GTA 6 as a single-player experience, and there is no confirmed date for multiplayer.
We also don't know how long the story is or how the game performs on Xbox Series S. Those answers will probably come from reviews.
If you already know you are buying it, our GTA 6 pre-order guide compares the two editions. PC players should read when GTA 6 is likely to reach PC.
