How to Make a QR Code for Wi-Fi

A Wi-Fi QR code lets anyone join your network by pointing their phone camera at it — no more reading out a long password. Here is how to make one and use it safely.

What you need

You only need two things: your network name (SSID) and its password. You should also know the security type — almost always WPA/WPA2/WPA3 on modern routers.

Make the code

  1. Open the Wi-Fi QR code generator.
  2. Type your SSID exactly as it appears (it is case-sensitive) and your password.
  3. Leave security on WPA unless you have an open or legacy WEP network.
  4. Download the code as PNG for screens, or PDF to print.

Where to put it

Print the code and place it where guests naturally look: a café table tent, a reception desk, the back of a hotel-room door, or a frame in your living room for visitors. When a phone camera scans it, the phone offers to join the network automatically.

Stay safe

  • The code contains your real password, so only display it where you trust the audience.
  • For public spaces, consider a separate guest network so visitors never touch your main devices.
  • If you change your Wi-Fi password, generate a fresh code — the old one will stop working.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Wi-Fi QR code work on all phones?

Yes. iPhones (iOS 11+) and modern Android phones read Wi-Fi QR codes with the built-in camera, no app needed.

Is it safe to share Wi-Fi with a QR code?

The code stores your actual password, so anyone who scans the printed code can connect. Display it only where you trust guests, and use a guest network for public places.

What if I change my password?

You will need to generate a new Wi-Fi QR code — the encoded password is fixed once the code is made.
